Cllrs Andrew Mackness and Habib Tejan are to take a different approach to meeting with residents and gathering views and concerns on issues.
They will hold surgeries and see individual residents on individual issues as many other Councillors already do.
They intend to hold these monthly on the fourth Tuesday of each month starting in September from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in the SMI Commuity Centre office, except August and December. The Community Wardens as well as Kent Police and other officers from Medway Council will attend from time to time.
We can email you the minutes from SMIRA meetings (which are a great source of information) and keep you updated with major items of news if you join our email list. See here for further details.
The item HIGHLIGHTED is the next meeting to be held. Click on the links in the table to view agendas/minutes/reports of the respective meeting. Any resident is welcome to attend these meetings on the night and without prior notice.
Members of the Board and Officers
Barry Woolford, Director
Barry has lived on the island for over 8 years coming from South Oxfordshire to be close to family. He is now retired. Before retirement he was the Health & Safety Manager for an international company. His interests are Island Waterways, he has built 7 narrowboats over a period of time, also MG cars are a great love having restored more than 10 MGs!
Glenn Rogers, Director
Glenn is retired but was a senior retail manager for 30 years with CIPD qualifications (CIPD is the professional body for HR and people development). He has lived on the Island since 2000 and as he is retired has said he would have the time to deliver the role and attend meetings on behalf of SMIRA and the Islanders.
Gina Carpenter, Director
Gina moved from Surrey to the Island last year. She is a mum to two grown up daughters and works as a Teaching Assistant in a secondary school supporting children with special educational needs. She was interested in becoming a Director of SMIRA to help support the local community and try to continue the good work that has already been done by the previous outstanding Board – a hard act to follow.
Yvonne Bishop, Director
Yvonne has lived on St Mary's Island since 1998 and has watched the Island grow from a few dwellings, some unmade roads, no parks and a Community Centre and Doctors Surgery in a portacabin into the thriving and diverse community that is here today. Our Community is, for the most part, a pleasant and safe place to live but in this past year the tensions that have always rumbled under the surface have broken into the open with the resulting resignations and recriminations.
I firmly believe that more diversity and inclusivity in the make-up of SMIRA will allow the Community to move forward and put this year of upheaval behind us, but in doing so SMIRA must work to understand why some people have only been able to vent their frustrations on social media. I hope to see real change in the representation of the residents and to put the residents back at the core of the Association.
My list of targets for SMIRA are:
Most of all I should like to see the Residents' Association move forward to embrace the fact that the Island has changed beyond all recognition in the past 20 years and SMIRA should be challenging itself to change too.
- For the Association to have more women and Black and Minority Ethnic residents on the committee, and a real representation of all of the ages that live here.
- To ensure that the voting structure is not weighted in favour of either gender (currently one vote per property).
- For the SMIRA meetings to be held at different times and on different days so that those who work away from the Island can attend if they wish.
- For the Association to be a forum for tenants and the young as well as those that meet the criteria for becoming a Director.
- For the Association to establish a proper complaints and mediation procedure.
Mandy Samrai , Director
Mandy is a Management Consultant and Magistrate. She has lived on the Island for 8 years and has worked in the Housing Development and Community Development sector for 25 years. Mandy has been a magistrate for 10 years and worked with local authorities and government agencies. All the above are skills that she believes she can offer to SMIRA as a director, for the benefit of the wider community.
Patrick O’Mara, Company Secretary
Patrick moved to St. Mary’s Island about 18 months ago and is a chartered accountant working at the same firm in Surrey for 30 years. During the last 18 months he has joined a local history group, Kent Archaeological Society and volunteers as an I.T. assistant at Gillingham Library. Patrick thinks his skillsets would be useful to the Board as Company Secretary.
